If You Could Be Mine

If You Could Be MineIf You Could Be Mine by Sara Farizan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I wanted to love this book. Sara Farizan was at Reading Matters in Melbourne this year, and she was entertaining, and funny, and heart-felt, and wonderful. But the main character, Sahar, drove me nuts with her lack of confidence and blind devotion to a girlfriend, Nasrin, who was quite obviously a spoilt, selfish cow. The ending is realistic and heart-breaking, and if you are looking for a traditional ‘happy-ending-romance’ this isn’t it.
I learned a lot about Iranian culture, and the family dynamic in a culture that undervalues women, and Sahar does, finally, grow up and get a life. A thought-probing book, and one that will definitely find a wide readership.
