Rules of Summer

Rules of SummerRules of Summer by Shaun Tan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Shaun Tan – wow!
This is an interesting work, quite ‘out there’ and Tan leaves great swathes of the story to the imagination. A picture tells a thousand words – in this case it is a million.
Ostensibly the story of two brothers during one adventurous summer, Tan has included mysterious travellers, planes, war, birds, fields, prisons and more. Always unusual, this is one of Tan’s most interesting illustrated works.
Rules of Summer will reward the reader who takes time to investigate and reread each page, as it is chockablock with crazy and whimsical characters and landscapes, and it would be a wonderful text to explore with young people.
