A Confusion of Princes

A Confusion of PrincesA Confusion of Princes by Garth Nix
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Such a great idea – Princes (of both genders) are taken from their parents at a young age and groomed to become rulers of small, large and universal Princedoms – the universe-sized ruler being the Emperor Heirself (a really nice play on the gender ambiguities in this novel).
Prince Khemri is a total jerk, but as we learn what his life has been like, then it becomes understandable, if no less irritating. His naivety rings true – it is that cock-sure, gung-ho, self-centred fantasy land that teenage boys live in in their heads – as does his gradual growth, and the relationship with his ‘significant other’ – the Assassin Haddad – follows all the tried and true rules yet comes out feeling fresh and new.
A great read – recommended for mature readers (a fair bit of violence) – probably best to be read in one long gulp.
